Sycamore Gap: It's not just a tree, Mixed media installation, February 2024.

Interim Show
Sycamore Gap: It's not just a tree, mixed media installation, 400 x 300 x 300cm (approx), February 2024

My practice developed here to move from a mostly personal subject, to one that is meaningful to a wider community. The felling of the Sycamore gap tree as a narrative felt relevant in its display of how people play a role in the significance of natural spaces. Accumulation and attachment of materials in the making of this work became important to the temporary memorialisation of this specific site. The subject also serves as a reminder of human influence on natural spaces, both positive and negative.

Material development

Development of interim show. These works were the initial inspiration of this exhibition from visits and a collection of materials from the site of the Sycamore gap landmark.

Installtion trialling

I experimented with various ways of installing fabric works within the exhibition space inspired by my visit to a textile exhibition at the Barbican. I decided not to present in this way after an accumulation of more material, and chose to drape this fabric above the viewer. This felt more reflective of a starting point, to connect to other materials representing a change to the site.
