A Lieu de mémoire, fabric installation, November 2023

1000 x 200 cm (approx 480 cm on floor)
Week 10 Winter Exhibition- Fina degree year

The work was inspired by philosophical theories on 'sites of memory'. Here I explore a line that connects detached prints in a sculptural form. The scale aims to disrupt the gallery space and initiate a relationship with the work and the viewer with interaction. The work moved forward from past exhibitions to explore a presence within the gallery space and became more sculptural in its form. Here the viewers interaction with the work became an important point of interest to re-invent the subject site in a white wall setting. Visually I explore sewing together displaced prints in a way they could connect in form and flow reflective of a narrative. The subject became less important than the form in the making of this work, and expanded my practice to think more about presentation and accumulation of materials. Abstract sculptures and printmaking of Chiharu Shiota and El Anatsui that explore themes of memory through installation of textiles, informed the making of this work. The scale of these works and the sculptural unity of material fragments opened new ways of reimagining the subject of my work.
