Returning to the site, Sycamore Gap work installed on-site, March 2023.
The work developed further to explore how this concept of ‘memorialisation’ is meaningful to a wider community. The site of The Sycamore Gap tree in Northumberland became a point of inspiration for the interim show, as its removal induced such a visceral response. The ‘murder’ of this popular and historical landmark, described as a ‘sentinel of time and elemental spirit’, led to an outpour of upset but also a sharing of memory. I expanded from past works to bring together collected materials from the site, bleaching darker fabric to reflect removal and past, as well as layered cyanotype prints using photographs taken on site. This allows for more dynamic compositions that play with light and shadow, but also introduces a contrasting natural colour palette.

Installing and photographing prints away from a gallery setting and returning to the site specific to the work to further explore the dialectic between site and non-site. Here I revisitied this cyclical process of making work and installation as continually developing. I specifically wanted to draw attention to the changes to the space. With the work I also wanted to leave my way of memorialising the site (temorarily), as other have done by leaving flowers and messages. The positioning of fabric draws attention to the now placed protection of what is left of the tree that once stood.
